What is Plone?

What is a Content Management System?
It's a popular term in the world of the web these days, but what does "CMS" really mean? And what can a good CMS offer you?
Why Should I Use a CMS?
One of the most common arguments against using a CMS here at the UW is that currently it is possible to create a good, basic website on the depts.washington.edu domain, where the cost of hosting is free. However, this argument fails to take into account the real costs of the development model it relies on.
